प्रस्तुत कथा ‘मिठाईवाला‘ लेखक भगवती प्रसाद वाजपेयी जी द्वारा लिखित मानवीय संबंधों पर आधारित एक अत्यंत मार्मिक कथा है। एक खिलौनेवाला-“बच्चों को बहलानेवाला, खिलौनेवाला।” की मीठी आवाज़ के साथ गलियों में घूमता था । उसका स्नेहपूर्ण व मधुर गान सुनकर निकट के मकानों में हलचल मच जाती है। छोटे बच्चों की माताएँ खिड़कियों से झाँककर उसे देखने लगती हैं। बच्चों का झुंड उसे घेर लेता है। बच्चे खिलौने देखकर ही प्रसन्न हो जाते हैं। वे पैसे लाकर खिलौने का मोल भाव करने लगते हैं। खिलौनेवाला बच्चों के नन्हीं नन्हीं हाथों से पैसे ले लेता और उनके मनपसंद खिलौने उन्हें दे देता। तत्पश्चात् पुनः खिलौनेवाला अपनी मधुर गान गाते हुए आगे बढ़ जाता।
The presented story ‘Mithaiwala’ is a very poignant story based on human relations written by author Bhagwati Prasad Vajpayee. A Toy seller – “The one who amuses the children, the toy seller.” Used to roam in the streets with the sweet voice of Hearing his affectionate and sweet song, there is commotion in the nearby houses. Mothers of small children start looking at him by peeping through the windows. A bunch of kids surround him. Children become happy just by seeing the toys. They start bargaining for the toy by bringing money. The toy seller would take money from the little hands of the children and give them their favorite toys. After that again the toy seller would go ahead singing his sweet song.
राम विजय बहादूर के बच्चे चुन्नू और मुन्नू भी एक दिन खिलौने खरीदकर घर लेकर आए। माँ रोहिणी बच्चों से खिलौने के दाम पूछती। बच्चे कहते हैं, “दो पैसे”। वह सोचने लगी कि खिलौनेवाला इतना सस्ता कैसे दे गया।

छह महीने बाद एक मुरलीवाला दो चार दिनों से नगर में मुरली बजाकर गाना सुनाया करता और मुरली बेचता। लोग उसे मुरली बजाने में उस्ताद मानने लगे। वह मुरली दो–दो पैसों में बेच देता था। नगर की हर गली में प्रतिदिन मुरलीवाले की चर्चा होने लगी। जब रोहिणी ने मुरलीवाले की मृदुल– मादक आवाज़ सुनी तो उसे खिलौनेवाले की याद आ गई। रोहिणी अपने पति को मुरली खरीदकर लाने के लिए भेजती है। पति विजयबाबू मुरलीवाले से मोल भाव के बहाने अनेक बातें करते हैं। आखिर दो–दो पैसों के लिए मुरली खरीदकर लाते हैं। मुरलीवाला बहुत देर तक बच्चों के झुंड में मुरलियाँ बेचता रहा। रोहिणी अपने मकान में बैठी मुरलीवाले की सारी बातें सुनती और अनुभव करती कि पहले बच्चों के साथ इतने प्यार से खिलौनेवाला ही बात करता था ।
After six months, a Murliwala used to recite songs by playing Murli in the city for two to four days and sell Murli. People started considering him as a master in playing Murli. He used to sell Murli for two paise. Murliwale started being discussed everyday in every street of the city. When Rohini heard the soft-intoxicating voice of the flute player, she remembered the toy seller. Rohini sends her husband to buy Murli. Husband Vijaybabu does many things to Murliwale on the pretext of bargaining. After all, Murli is bought and brought for a couple of paise. Murliwala went on selling murlis to a bunch of children for a long time. Rohini used to sit in her house listening to all the talk of Murliwala and felt that earlier only the toywala used to talk with the children with such love.
आठ महीने बाद सर्दी का मौसम था। रोहिणी अपने घर की छत पर थी। उसी वक्त नीचे गली से उसे आवाज़ सुनाई पड़ी – “बच्चों को बहलानेवाला, मिठाईवला “। जब रोहिणी ने उस मिठाईवाले की आवाज़ सुनी तो उसे वह आवाज़ परिचित–सी लगी। तुरंत नीचे आकर, दादी को कहती है ” मिठाईवाले को बुला लो ” । दादी मिठाईवाले को अपने पास बुलाती है। बातचीत के दौरान रोहिणी समझ लेती है कि मुरलीवाला ही अ मिठाईवाला बनकर आया है। रोहिणी उनसे मिठाइयाँ खरीदती है। उससे बात करते हुए रोहिणी को पता चलता है कि इन व्यापारों से मिठाईवाले को पैसा तो बहुत कम मिलता है, लेकिन संतोष बहुत मिलता है।
Eight months later it was winter. Rohini was on the terrace of her house. At the same time, he heard a voice from the street below – “Child entertainer, Mithaiwala”. When Rohini heard the voice of that sweet seller, she found that voice familiar. Coming down immediately, she tells Dadi “call the sweet seller”. Dadi calls the sweet seller to her. During the conversation, Rohini understands that Murliwala has come posing as A Mithaiwala. Rohini buys sweets from them. While talking to him, Rohini learns that the sweet seller gets very little money from these businesses, but gets a lot of satisfaction.
आगे, रोहिणी के बहुत पूछने पर मिठाईवाला अपनी कहानी बताता है – उसके भी परिवार, बच्चे आदि थे। वह बहुत संपन्न भी था। लेकिन क्रूर कालचक्र ने सबको इधर–उधर कर दिया। अब मिठाईवाला उनकी खोज में इधर–उधर फिरता है। वह यहाँ के बच्चों में अपने बच्चों को देखने का प्रयास करता है। ये सारी बातें कहते हुए मिठाईवाले की आँखों से आँसू निकल आते हैं। इस बीच में रोहिणी के बच्चे आ जाते हैं। मिठाईवाला बच्चों को मिठाई देता है। मिठाई के लिए पैसा लिये बिना ही वह जाने लगता है। उसकी आवाज़ “बच्चों को बहलानेवाला मिठाईवाला” बहुत दूर तक गूंजती रही।
