“परीक्षा” नामक इस कहानी के कहानीकार प्रेमचंद हैं। आप उपन्यास–सम्राट के नाम से विख्यात हैं। प्रेमचंद ने कई उपन्यास लिखे हैं और कहानियाँ भी । इनकी रचनाओं में कथा वस्तु, पात्र–निर्माण, वार्तालाप, भाषा–शैली आदि पक्ष आकर्षक ढंग से प्रस्तुत होते हैं।

Premchand is the narrator of this story called “Pariksha”.  You are famous by the name of Novel-Emperor.  Premchand has written many novels and stories too.  In his creations, aspects of story, character-building, conversation, language-style etc. are presented in an attractive manner.

सरदार सुजानसिंह रियासत देवगढ़ के दीवान थे। वे अपने बुढ़ापे और असमर्थता के कारण पद से मुक्त होना चाहते थे। उन्होंने राजा साहब से विनती की। राजा साहब उन्हें मुक्त करना नहीं चाहते थे। राजा ने अंत में यह शर्त रखी कि योग्य दीवान का चयन सुजानसिंह ही करें और उसके बाद दीवान पद से मुक्त हो जाएँ ।

Sardar Sujan Singh was the Diwan of the princely state Deogarh.  He wanted to be relieved of the post due to his old age and incapacity.  He requested Raja Saheb.  Raja Saheb did not want to free him.  In the end, the king put a condition that only Sujan Singh should choose the deserving Diwan and after that he would be freed from the post of Diwan.

दूसरे दिन देश के सभी प्रमुख समाचार–पत्रों में विज्ञापन निकला, “रियासत देवगढ़ के लिए दीवान का चयन होनेवाला है, यह ज़रूरी नहीं कि आवेदक ग्रेजुएट हों, लेकिन हृष्ट–पुष्ट होना परमावश्यक है। आवेदक एक महीने तक रियासत में रहेंगे। उनकी रहन–सहन, आचार–विचार की जाँच होगी। अंत में फल घोषित किया जाएगा। “

The next day an advertisement came out in all the major newspapers of the country, “Diwan is going to be selected for Riyasat Deogarh, it is not necessary that the applicant should be a graduate, but it is necessary to be strong.  The applicants will stay in the princely state for one month.  Their way of life and conduct will be investigated .  Finally the result will be declared.

दीवान पद के लिए आवेदन करते हुए सैकड़ों आदमी देवगढ़ आ पहुँचे । वे तरह–तरह के थे। देश के कोने–कोने से लोग आये थे । एक दिन शाम के वक्त मैदान में हॉकी का खेल चल रहा था। दीवान पद के कई उम्मीदवार खेल के बाद लौट रहे थे। तब रास्ते में एक बूढ़े किसान की गाड़ी नाले में फँस गयी थी । कीचड़ भी था । बूढ़ा किसान हज़ार कोशिश कर हार गया था । वह सहायता के लिए इधर–उधर देखता था। लेकिन किसी ने उसपर ध्यान नहीं दिया। क्योंकि सभी उम्मीदवार खेल की वजह से बहुत थक गये थे । इसलिए बूढ़े पर उन्हें दया नहीं आयी ।

Hundreds of people reached Deogarh applying for the post of Diwan.  They were of different types.  People had come from every corner of the country.  One day in the evening, a game of hockey was going on in the field.  Many candidates for the post of Dewan were returning after the game.  Then on the way an old farmer’s car got stuck in a drain.  There was also mud.  The old farmer was defeated after a thousand attempts.  He looked here and there for help.  But no one paid attention to him.  Because all the candidates were very tired because of the game.  That’s why they didn’t feel pity on the old man.

लेकिन पं. जानकीनाथ से बूढ़े का कष्ट सहा नहीं गया। वह काफ़ी थक गया था और उसके पैरों में चोट लगी हुई थी। वह लंगड़ाता हुआ बूढ़े के पास आया और उसकी सहायता की। गाड़ी ऊपर आ गयी । बूढ़ा जानकीनाथ को आशीर्वाद देकर चला गया।

But Pt. Jankinath could not bear the pain of the old man.  He was very tired and his feet hurt.  He came to the limping old man and helped him.  The car came up.  The old man left after blessing Janakinath.

एक महीना बीत चला। उस दिन नये दीवान की घोषणा होनेवाली थी । सभी लोग इकट्ठे हुए । सुजानसिंह ने पं. जानकीनाथ को रियासत का नया दीवान घोषित किया। उन्होंने कहा – पं. जानकीनाथ ने खुद घायल होकर भी एक गरीब किसान की सहायता की। उनके हृदय में साहस, आत्मबल और उदारता हैं । एक समर्थ दीवान के लिए इन्हीं गुणों की ज़रूरत है।

A month passed.  On that day the new Diwan was to be announced.  Everyone gathered.  Sujan Singh declared Pt. Janakinath as the new Diwan of the state.  He said – Pt. Jankinath helped a poor farmer even after being injured.  He has courage, self-confidence and generosity in his heart.  These are the qualities needed for a capable Diwan.
