भारतवर्ष शिक्षा क्षेत्र में अग्रसर है। पुराने समय में गुरुकुल में अपनी मातृभाषा में शिक्षा दी जाती थी । जब अंग्रेज़ भारत पर शासन करते थे उनको दुभाषियों की ज़रूरत थी। देश में कई भाषाएँ प्रचलित थीं और आधुनिक विषयों पर पुस्तकें इन भाषाओं में उपलब्ध नहीं थीं । मेकाले का उद्देश्य था कि शिक्षा की पद्धति अंग्रेज़ी माध्यम बनायी जाने पर अंग्रेज़ी के विद्वान उत्पन्न हो जाएँगे और अंग्रेज़ी में उपलब्ध पुस्तकों का अनुवाद देशी भाषा में हो जाएगा। इस प्रकार भारतीय अंग्रेज़ी सभ्यता के संपर्क में रहेंगे। परिणामस्वरुप स्कूलों में अंग्रेज़ी का प्रचार दिन दुगुना रात चौगुना होने लगा । देशी भाषाओं का प्रयोग कम होता जा रहा था और भारतीय अपना साहित्य भूलने लगे ।

India is leading in the field of education.  In olden times, education was imparted in one’s mother tongue in Gurukul.  When the British ruled India, they needed interpreters.  Many languages ​​were prevalent in the country and books on modern subjects were not available in these languages.  Macaulay’s objective was that English scholars would be produced when the system of education was made English medium and the books available in English would be translated into the native language.  In this way the Indians would be in touch with the English civilization.  As a result, the promotion of English in schools started doubling day and night.  The use of native languages ​​was decreasing and Indians started forgetting their literature.

देश के शिक्षा – शास्त्रियों और नेताओं को यह बात दुखने लगी और वे आंदोलन करने लगे। उनकी माँग यह थी कि शिक्षा का माध्यम अंग्रेजी के बदले देशी भाषा बनायी जाए। विद्यार्थियों को मातृभाषा में विज्ञान, इतिहास गणित, भूगोल आदि विषय सिखाएँ जाएँ तो वे विषय उनके लिए बोझ न बनेंगे। अंग्रेज़ी के माध्यम से शिक्षा देने से विद्यार्थियों की बुद्धि कुण्ठित हो जाती है। उनका दिमाग थक जाता है। नये विषयों में उनकी रुचि नहीं होती। मातृभाषा के माध्यम से शिक्षा देने से कठिन विषयों को भी आसानी से सीख सकते हैं ।

The educationists and leaders of the country started feeling sad about this and they started agitating.  Their demand was that the medium of education should be made the native language instead of English.  If students are taught science, history, mathematics, geography etc. in their mother tongue, then those subjects will not become a burden for them.  By giving education through English, the intellect of the students gets frustrated.  His mind gets tired.  He is not interested in new subjects.  By giving education through mother tongue, even difficult subjects can be learned easily.

पर कुछ लोग देशी भाषा को शिक्षा का माध्यम बनाने का विरोध करते हैं। उनका कहना है कि देश भाषाओं में अच्छी पुस्तकें नहीं हैं। लेकिन रूस, चीन, जापान आदि देशों में अपनी भाषा में ही शिक्षा दी जाती है। भारत में भी स्कूल एवं कालेजों में देशी भाषा के माध्यम से शिक्षा दी जा सकती है और जो विषय अंग्रेज़ी के माध्यम से 10 साल में सिखाया जाता है, वह बस 4 साल में देशी भाषाओं द्वारा सिखाया जा सकता है ।

But some people oppose making the native language the medium of education.  He says that there are no good books in the vernacular languages.  But in countries like Russia, China, Japan etc. education is imparted in their own language.  In India also, education can be given through the medium of native language in schools and colleges and the subject which is taught through English in 10 years, can be taught through native languages ​​in just 4 years.

आज़ादी के बाद देश में स्वदेशी और स्व–भाषा की भावना जागृत हो गई है। कुछ स्कूलों एवं कालेजों में मातृभाषा के माध्यम से शिक्षा देने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं। तमिलनाडु और आंध्र प्रदेश में स्कूल के संपूर्ण पाठ्यक्रम की परीक्षाएँ प्रांतीय भाषाओं में भी दी जा रही हैं। सभी भाषाएँ सम्माननीय हैं। हमें किसी भाषा से नफरत नहीं है। हम इतना ही चाहते हैं कि हमारी मातृभाषा के माध्यम से हम ज्ञानार्जन करें।

After independence, the feeling of indigenous and self-language has awakened in the country.  Some schools and colleges are trying to impart education through mother tongue.  In Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, examinations for the entire school curriculum are being conducted in the regional languages ​​as well.  All languages ​​are respected.  We do not hate any language.  All we want is to acquire knowledge through our mother tongue.
