पुस्तकों का संग्रह जिस स्थान पर हो, उसे पुस्तकालय कहते हैं। पुस्तकालय दो प्रकार के होते हैं। एक निजी (प्राइवेट) और दूसरा सार्वजनिक । जो ख़ास व्यक्ति के लाभ के लिए होते हैं, वे निजी पुस्तकालय कहलाते हैं। जो पुस्तकालय जन–साधारण के लिए हैं, वे सार्वजनिक पुस्तकालय कहलाते हैं।

The place where there is a collection of books is called a library. There are two types of libraries. One private and the other public. Those which are meant for the benefit of a particular person are called private libraries. The libraries which are meant for the general public are called public libraries.

कुछ लोग यह सोचते हैं कि हमारी शिक्षा स्कूलों और कालेजों में ही ख़त्म हो जाती है। यह विचार ठीक नहीं है। केवल पाठ्य पुस्तकें पढ़नेवाले विद्यार्थियों का ज्ञान सीमित रहता है। इसके विपरीत पुस्तकालयों से अच्छी–अच्छी पुस्तकें लेकर पढ़नेवालों का ज्ञान विशाल रहता है। पाठ्यक्रम की बहुत–सी ऐसी पुस्तकें होती हैं, जिनकी व्याख्या के लिए दूसरी पुस्तकों से सहायता लेनी पड़ती है। ऐसी हालत में पुस्तकालयों से उन पुस्तकों को लेकर लाभ उठाया जा सकता है।

Some people think that our education ends in schools and colleges. This idea is not right. The knowledge of students who read only text books remains limited. On the contrary, the knowledge of those who read by taking good books from the libraries remains vast. There are many such books of the syllabus, for the interpretation of which help has to be taken from other books. In such a situation, benefits can be taken by taking those books from the libraries.

वास्तव में पुस्तकालय मानव के लिए बहुत बड़ी देन है। पुस्तकालय से छोटे–बड़े, शिक्षक–शिक्षार्थी, अमीर–गरीब, स्त्री–पुरुष सब लोग फ़ायदा उठा सकते हैं।

In fact, the library is a great gift to mankind. Young and old, teachers and students, rich and poor, men and women, everyone can take advantage of the library.

हमारे देश में आजकल सभी शहरों में अच्छे पुस्तकालय हैं। पुस्तकालयों में पूर्ण शांति का राज्य रहता है । इस कारण वहाँ किसीके अध्ययन में विघ्न नहीं पड़ता । पुस्तकालय का सदस्य बनकर वहाँ से पुस्तकें अपने घर पर भी ले जा सकते हैं। फिर उसे वापस कर दूसरी किताब घर लाकर पढ़ सकते हैं।

Nowadays in our country there are good libraries in all the cities. Absolute peace reigns in the libraries. Because of this, there is no disturbance in anyone’s study there. By becoming a member of the library, you can also take books from there to your home. Then after returning it, you can bring another book home and read it.

पुस्तकालय वास्तव में बड़ी उपयोगी संस्था है।इससे प्रत्येक मनुष्य को लाभ उठाना चाहिए।यह बड़े हर्ष की बात है कि आज भारत वर्ष में पुस्तकालय लोकप्रिय बनते जा रहे हैं।यह देश की उन्नति का शुभ लक्षण है।

The library is indeed a very useful institution. Everyone should take advantage of this. It is a matter of great pleasure that libraries are becoming popular in India today. This is an auspicious sign of the progress of the country.

अब सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी के बढ़ते–बढ़ते ई–पुस्तकें, ई–पत्रिकाएँ आदि प्रचलित होने लगी हैं। लेकिन हाथ में पुस्तक रखकर आराम से बैठकर पढ़ने में जो आनंद मिलता है, वह ई–पुस्तक के माध्यम से मिलेगा क्या? यह विचारणीय विषय है ।

Now with the advancement of information technology, e-books, e-magazines etc. are becoming popular. But will the pleasure that you get in sitting comfortably with a book in hand, be available through an e-book? This is a matter to consider.
